What is a Super Trooper?
A Super Trooper is a Scout who comes to Camp Read without his or her home Unit.
They may be coming to Read for a week with their troop and then staying for an extra week. Or they may be attending Read a different week from their troop due to a scheduling conflict.
How are Super Trooper Units put together?
We place Super Troopers together in a Troop of other Super Troopers or tuck them into one of the fantastic troops attending with us that week (that we know well and trust).
A Super Trooper unit will be provided two experienced, trained adults to serve as Scoutmasters for the week. These adults work with the Scouts the same way Scoutmasters work with Scouts in other Troops and help to ensure that all Super Troopers get the most out of their stay in camp.
All Super Troopers sleep at Camp Buckskin, but of course can take merit badges anywhere on property.
What will my Scout do in camp?
Super Troopers participate in the same activities as all the other Units. You can find the Parents Guide at www.ghvscouting.org/read/forms.
All Scouts live in a campsite with the rest of the troop and eat with them in the dining hall. They sleep in a two-person canvas tent erected on a wooden platform. Cots and mattresses are provided.
They can choose from a Trail to First Class Program and over 50 merit badges as well as many other exciting outdoor activities including:
- caving
- rock climbing on the tallest tower in the northeast
- zip lining into water
- horseback riding
- low high ropes challenge courses
- Mountain biking
Campership Grants
We feel so strongly about the outdoor program that we have made a commitment that
no young person will be denied a camp experience due to financial constraints. To that
end, the Greater Hudson Valley Council has established a Campership Assistance
Fund to assist Scouts and families that need it. Campership Application
Worried about safety?
Health and safety standards are evaluated and reviewed annually through a rigorous annual Scouting America accreditation process.
Every staff member and adult leader on the property has taken Youth Protection Training.
In addition to 50% of staff being trained in First Aid and CPR, we have multiple EMT’s on staff as well.
How do I register?
Click on the week/s that you would like your Scout to attend, it will take you right to the registration!
Registration will open around the first week of February. You can register with just the $100 deposit, with final balances due May 15th. Please note, registration for merit badges will open on April 1st.
