Scout Leader:
I wanted to reach out and update you on some important things that are happening at Curtis S. Read Scout Reservation for this summer.
- The bridge at the North End of Brant Lake is out. Please watch for detours. We will send you a map before your scheduled week at camp. Please make sure any parents driving to camp have the map.
- We have upgraded the internet on the Reservation. We have more bandwidth and have upgraded our access points. Our goal is to allow you to have solid email. The system will not support a large number of people on video conferencing software (Zoom, Teams, etc.). This is a big update, and more is to come, but we are not at the rate or bandwidth of your home or office. It is still camp.
- Newton Hall (Dining Hall) is undergoing an interior facelift. All the woodwork has been sanded and stained. The building is going to look great.
- Food Service – we have hired Chartwells Food Service to manage the Dining Hall this summer. They will be providing a Food Service Manager and Head Chef. We are excited to move to this model.
- Waubeeka Food Project – more equipment has been purchased. We will post a menu as soon as we get that finished with Chartwells.
- Program Issues – as with many employers in our country, we are having major issues finding staff for this summer. Due to these staffing issues, we might be faced with having to cut or reduce some program options. Final decisions on any adjustments will be made the week after Memorial Day. If you know of anyone that could fill any of these positions, please have them contact us at GHV.Camping@scouting.org or check out our Staff Page at: Read Staff (ghvscouting.org)
- Aquatics
- Aquatics Director - We have 1 Aquatics Director we need 3, could offer most programs with 2. If we are not able to secure another Aquatics Director, we will have to adjust how the waterfronts operate and are open. (21+)
- Lifeguards – We have about ¼ the number of Lifeguards we need. (16+)
-
- Equestrian – We need an Equestrian Director. Without a Director, we will not be able to offer the Horse Program. (21+)
- Trek Guide – Currently we have NO Trek Guides. Without securing some Guides, we will have to cancel Treks (18+)
- Food Service Staff – We have openings in the Kitchen: Assistant Cook (18+), Kitchen Staff (15+)
- We have other Program positions available, so if you know anyone that wants to spend the summer in the Adirondacks, please contact us.
We are very excited for camp and for your Scouts to come and experience Read and the Adirondacks, but without properly trained staff, we just can’t offer all the programs. If you know of anyone that is looking for a position this summer, please have them contact us.
