The New Member Coordinator (NMC) is a required position for each unit, and is instrumental in youth retention and recruitment. But aside from that, why have a NMC? It takes the pressure off the Cubmaster / Scoutmaster, Den Leaders, and Committee Chair so they can concentrate on running the unit and events. They act as a point of contact for new families to the Pack or Troop so they can answer all of their questions about how Scouting works. They provide regular updates to the new families in the unit about the upcoming activities and meetings.
But what goes into being a successful NMC?
- Good communication to the new families that joined the Pack, Troop, Crew, or Ship
- A desire to have fun!
- A love of Scouting
- A knowledge of how the Unit operates
- Embrace diversity and kindness. Hear all voices and concerns
This is NOT a uniformed position in the unit. But this person should be up to date with the committee meetings and unit calendar, so they can properly convey this to the new families.
Please be on the lookout for upcoming training sessions throughout the year as well. Also, for a self-guided reference of the position, please check out the resources and training videos here -> https://scoutingwire.org/marketing-and-membership-hub/councils/new-member-coordinator/
